선조의 어필 : 칠언시 <증점(曾點)>을 새긴 현판

왕의 글씨를 뜻하는 어필은 서예의 한 부분으로, 도덕적 수양의 방편임과 동시에 왕실의 심미적 취향을 보여주는 교양이었다. 또한 임금의 생각과 사상, 통치 의지 등을 나타낼 수 있는 정치적인 의사표현 방식이기도 했다. 어필은 왕을 상징하는 것으로 여겨져 존숭되었으며, 영구히 보전하기 위해 석각이나 현판, 이들을 탑본?本하여 만든 첩帖등을 만들기도 했다. 예술적 감성과 취향이 뛰어났던 선조宣祖(재위 1567-1608)의 서예는 매우 높이 평가되었다. 조선의 명필 석봉石峯 한호韓濩(1543-1605)를 후원하였고, 한호 서체에서 영향을 받아 엄격하면서도 무겁고 진중한 글씨를 남겼다. 증점 시를 쓴 이 현판은 선조 글씨 특징과 함께 왕실 서예의 풍격을 잘 보여준다.  

Joseon King’s calligraphy was revered as an object representing his ideas, philosophy or even himself. The calligraphy was often inscribed on stones or wood, and their rubbings were made into an album for preservation. The calligraphy of King Seonjo (r. 1567–1608), who was known to have excellent artistic sensitivity and connoisseurship, was highly appreciated and this plaque with his calligraphy demonstrates his distinctive brushstrokes.
