Recorded in this protocol are the details of the repair work on Mansujeon Hall within Changdeokgung Palace that was carried out during 1655-1656. Changdeokgung Palace, along with the other palaces, was burned down during the Japanese Invasion of Korea between 1592-1598; it was reconstructed during the reign of King Gwanghaegun (r. 1608-123); however, all the buildings, except for Injeongjeon Hall (the main throne hall), were destroyed due to the Military Coup of King Injo (r. 1623-1649) in the year he was crowned. The repair work on Daejojeon, Seonjeongjeon, and Huijeongdang Halls was conducted in 1647 (the 25th year of King Injo’s reign), using construction materials that remained from the demolished Ingyeonggung Palace established by King Gwanghaegun in 1617.

In general, five to nine copies of each royal protocol were made in one of the two versions: deluxe and regular. The deluxe version was produced exclusively for the king’s perusal with superb materials and skills; on the other hand, the regular copies, made of relatively inferior materials, were kept in state archives or various relevant governmental offices for preservation or reading. This particular copy is the only extant regular version of this royal protocol in Korea; its copy for the king’s personal perusal is currently housed in the Bibliothèque nationale de France. This is also the only royal protocol that covers the construction work of a queen dowager’s living quarters.
