Engravings on the stones are King Sukjong’s own calligraphic works which read, “龍” (‘yong’ meaning “a dragon”) and “飛”(‘bi’ meaning “to fly”).
The newly crowned king compiled and published the written compositions and calligraphic works of former kings, and specially selected some of them to be carved on stone, which is called “御筆刻石” (‘eopil gakseok’ meaning “the king’s calligraphy on stone”) for greater permanency.

The 19th king of Joseon was born to King Hyeonjong (r. 1659-1674) and Queen Myeongseong (1642-1684). He was a devotee of learning as well as poetry and paintings with excellent calligraphic skills.

King Sukjong’s calligraphy works on stone that remain are the second largest number after those of King Yeongjo (r. 1724-1776).
