King Heonjong (r. 1834-1849) used this seal while pursuing personal interests such as poetry and painting. He, as one of the most influential figures of seal art in the Joseon royal court, enjoyed collecting and appreciating paintings and calligraphy. The king was also well versed in epigraphy; he especially cherished the calligraphy and painting of KIM, Jeonghui (1786-1856), who was a great contemporary master of epigraphy. He was also an ardent collector of seals. He collected and appreciated the seals used by prominent figures, both Korean and Chinese, and added his own to the collection. “萬幾餘暇” (mangiyeoga) inscribed on this seal means “a break amid the king’s countless state affairs”. The seal features a dragon flying through clouds.
