This Seonwonrok (璿源錄), or the Royal Genealogy of the Joseon Dynasty, compiled in 1681, lists the personal information of the king’s kindred. The royal genealogy produced before King Taejong (r. 1400-1418) included not only the progenitor of the Yi clan of the Joseon royal family but the half-brothers of King Taejo (r. 1392-1398), the first king of Joseon. Taejong, however, ordered the royal genealogy to be divided into three categories - "Seonwonrok," "Jongchinrok," and "Yuburok"- in 1412 for fear of possible disputes over the succession of the throne after his death. Seonwonrok (璿源錄), the Record of Royal Ascendants, limited the royal lineage from King Taejong himself to his direct ancestors up to Yi Han, the progenitor of the Yi clan, whereas Jongchinrok (宗親錄), the Record of Royal Agnatic Descent, included the legitimate sons of his father King Taejo (r. 1392-1398) and himself. Yuburok (類附錄), the Record of Other Royal Clans, on the other hand, recorded the daughters of the king and their descendants, and the sons of royal concubines. As a result, the half-brothers of King Taejo, who made significant contributions to the foundation of the Joseon Dynasty, were completely excluded from the succession to the throne, laying the foundation for only immediate descendants of King Taejong to succeed to the throne, in an attempt to stabilize the Joseon royal family.
