The royal protocols describe the details of the imperial wedding ceremony of Emperor Sunjong (r. 1907-1910) and Empress Sunjeong (1894-1966) in 1906. Emperor Sunjong was married twice, first in 1882 (the 19th year of King Gojong’s reign) and again in 1906 (the 10th year of Emperor Gojong’s reign). His first marriage was with a daughter of the Min clan, who was posthumously entitled as Empress Sunmyeonghyo (1872-1904). Due to her demise, however, he remarried a year before his enthronement as emperor. This is the only protocol describing the court wedding ceremony published during the Korean Empire that was recorded in accordance with the ritual formalities transformed to match the status of the imperial state after the declaration of the Korean Empire; however, it still earnestly follows the tradition and precedents of the Joseon royal court. The protocols detail the expenses incurred, human resources, illustrations, participant position charts, etc.
