Originally a small building used to keep royal compositions and calligraphic works inside the palace temple in 1694 (the 20th year of King Sukjong’s reign), Gyujanggak (奎章閣) was expanded into the royal library and the academic and research institution by King Jeongjo (r. 1776-1800) in 1776. This plaque was also moved to the new building at the time. The establishment of Gyujanggak, the key institution during the reign of King Jeongjo, ushered in what is now known as the “cultural renaissance” era of Joseon.
